    Description

Civil War Period Navy Enlisted "Round Jacket".
A fine example of a very rare jacket of which there are but a hand full of surviving examples. Dating between 1857 and 1863, this jacket is identical to examples pictured on pages 152-155 of Ron Field's excellent book Bluejackets/ Uniforms of the United States Navy in the Civil War Period 1852-1865.
This jacket exhibits the four buttons on the cuff which were used until 1863. The four button cuff was generally revised to three buttons in 1863 to save on the cost of materials. In Ron Field's book, an example of the three button cuff can be seen on page 156. Interestingly, this same picture shows the metal rings used to secure the buttons to the jacket, allowing the wearer to remove the buttons for polishing. This jacket exhibits all of its rings also. Stenciled on the back lining of the jacket are "3","S" and "4 S 1" with a partial "3".
