Belgian WWI Period 2nd Lancer Regiment Model 1863 Tschapka. Black lacquered leather body and front visor with gilded trim. Large sunburst front plate with the regiment's insignia of crossed lances and number "2" upon a shield. The top of the mortarboard is constructed of fine grey wool with gilded devices at each corner. The lower portion of the mortarboard was probably yellow but has faded to a lighter shade. At the base of the mortarboard is a 1¼" wide binding of gilt lace. The gilded chinchains are backed with yellow wool cloth and attached to either side of the cap by ornate lion's head bosses. The cap has a red cloth lining and black leather sweatband. The tschapka body is crazed and looks to have been re-polished. The lining is worn, but this rather scarce helmet is still in very good condition.
