Etched and Gilded Vamplate, Circa 19th Century, Made in the South German Style of the Mid-16th Century.
A vamplate is a large conical guard fixed on the shaft of a lance to the protect the hand of the combatant. The piece is of conical form of two hammer-welded concentric plates with an opening 10 ¾-inches and about 2 ½-inch opening for the lance shaft. The large opening is bordered by thirteen round-headed rivets of brass that retain, beneath their circular washers, an internal lining-band of leather. The surface of the vamplate is etched with foliate designs accented in gilt in three radiating bands and in a peripheral border with interlacing foliate strap work and in the panels between them with a linear design of scrolling foliage. The consignor indicates that this vamplate came from the Duke del Infantado collection in Madrid, Spain. Heritage has not researched this claim and thus can't positively confirm the provenance.

Condition: Very good. A handsome piece with considerable eye appeal. A few old repairs present but otherwise retaining considerable gilt and with a scattered areas of old dark surface rust.
