About Mint Civil War Regulation US Issue Cavalry Enlisted Man's Shell Jacket. One very small seam opening, with old repair, on back of right sleeve, negligible and barely detectable. Also one small seam opening in the center of the original coarse brown wool body lining, again very minor/negligible, else the jacket is mint, with all original buttons, piping and deep rich color. White cotton sleeve lining, with maker's inspector's stamp in right sleeve along with size, "3". Unusual and quite scarce as these shell jackets are generally either very small or very large sizes that were never issued, whereas this example is in a commonly issued size. Armpits show sweat stains indicating minor honest use. Black paint stenciled marking in center of body lining in 3/8" block letters, "1736B / 4 0". There are no marks indicating this piece was ever in the hands of a costumer and appears to be an issued, rather than surplus, specimen. An exceptional Civil War cavalry EM shell jacket.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
