    Description

A Composite Full Suit of Armor, Second Half of the 16th Century.

Approximately 67-inches in height overall and 76-inches with wooden base included. Of typical form, comprising of an Italian closed helmet with 2-piece skull joined by a narrow comb, fitted with brass plume holder. Pivoted visor with sight divided by roped ridge. Appears to have elements of a mid 16th century breast plate, probably of Swiss origin [according to Sotheby's description of it originally] struck with 2 marks, with roped flanged turns at the neck and gussets. Fitted with skirt of two lames carrying a pair of tassets each of seven lames moving on sliding rivets, full arm guards formed with large spaulders, the turners with punched and scalloped edges. Pair of German gauntlets, [one is detached], both with hinged cuffs embossed for the ulna, raised cabled knuckle plate and later thumb plates. Pair of full leg defences, with Italian cuisses of one plate turned and roped at the top, later well-formed greaves and sabatons, studded with brass capped lining rivets throughout. Contained on figural stand, fitted with mail element [fald] portions. A great suit that would benefit with some added care and handling.
Note: Previously Sold at Sotheby's in the 1990's according to consignor. Photocopies of the catalog are included in the sale, but no sale date or catalog cover is provided.

Condition: Good for its age and configuration, but moderate rust throughout from storage and handling. Various nicks throughout. Upper neck plate, missing. Some losses and missing to straps. Noticeable pitting to exposed areas including helmet, neck plate and backplate with some noticeable nicks, chips at edges.
