    Description

    6th New York Light Artillery: Joseph R. Bennett Dog Tag.
    30 mm silvered white metal. The obverse reads at top "War of 1861" and below: "Engaged in the Above Battles" within an encircling wreath. The "blank" field is stamped: "Yorktown/ Williamsburg/ Fair Oaks/ 7 Days Before Richmond/ Fredericksburg". The reverse is stamped: "J. R. Bennett/ 6th/ N.Y. Ind./ Battery./ Rahway, N.J." Holed suspension flange at top. Unusually good condition with much of the original silvering still present. Bennett served from June 6, 1861 to June 21, 1864. The lot is accompanied by a photo of Bennett's gravestone, a photo of the 6th Independent New York Battery monument at Gettysburg and fourteen pages of battle reports for this unit [modern transcripts].
