59th New York Infantry: Columbus C. Swanger Dog Tag.
27 mm gilt brass. The obverse has a shield and reads "War For The Union 1862". The reverse is stamped: C. Swanger/ Co. H/ 59/ Rgt./ V.C./ N.Y.S.I." Columbus S. Swanger enlisted on March 15, 1862 in Belleville, Ohio. He fought at South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Mine Run, the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and Sailors' Creek. He was wounded May 17, 1864 at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. A dug piece, the obverse retains close to half of the original gilding. The reverse has granularity and moderate wear. The inscription is light, but legible. An interesting tag for the Ohio or New York collector from a hard-fought unit!
