    Description

[Texas Rangers]. Captain Frank Jones Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 8" x 10", Marathon [Texas], March 5, 1893. Texas Ranger Captain Jones of Company "D" writes to "Humphris & Co." of Marfa, Texas, sixty miles away, ordering corn and asking for prices. (Individual Rangers supplied their own mounts, but the state of Texas provided forage for them.) In full:

"I want about 1200# corn for the Shafter detachment and will want it sent down. I will have to give you voucher to be paid out of the next appropriation which there is no doubt will be made as the committee reported unanimously in favor of it. Now what are your best rates on Corn?"

Frank Jones, who made a name for himself while serving as captain of Company "D" of the Frontier Battalion, had been keeping order west of the Pecos River. In early 1893, Mexican bandits stole silver ore from the nearby town of Shafter. The "Shafter detachment" mentioned in the letter is likely a group of Texas Rangers from Jones' company sent to the small town to monitor the situation. Four months after writing this letter, Mexican bullets killed Jones as he and his Rangers descended on an adobe house just south of the Mexican border. Humphris & Co. was the only general merchandise store in the small town of Marfa in the early 1890s. Captain Jones' letters are uncommon; this one is on lined paper that has age toned. Repairs to tears along folds on recto and verso.
