[Texas C.S.A.]. Galveston County Unengrossed Soldier's Enlistment Certificate. Printed on the first and third page of a bifolium, 8.25" x 10.5". Galveston, circa 1861. At top of first page, "OATH" in decorative type. By signing this, a soldier swears allegiance "to the State of Texas and the Confederate States of America; and that I will serve them honestly and faithfully against all their emenies [sic], or opposers, whatsoever..." The enlistment form appears on the third page. With blank spaces for the soldier's name and age, the soldier also attests that he has neither a wife or child. This is the first such certificate we have handled, and surely the requirements for enlistment would have loosened significantly after the first year of the war. From the Robert E. Davis Collection.

Condition: Wear at folds, including a bit of paper loss occurring at margins. A few small chips and stray stains. Otherwise bright paper.
