[Samuel H. Walker]. Forage Return for Texas Rangers' Horses and Mules, signed twice by "Joseph Wells / Lt. Commanding Raingers." One page, 8" x 10", Fort Brown [Texas], June 18, 1846. The heading reads, "Forage Return for 58 Horses & 6 Mules belonging to Capt. S. H. Walkers Company of Mounted Texian Rangers for five days, commencing the 18th Day of June and ending the 22nd day of June 1846." Listed in the chart below the heading are the number of horses and mules; the amount of corn, oats, and hay; and the daily allowance for each horse and mule. Under the heading "Remarks" is written, "This return includes 7 Horses of the Bexar Rangers."

"Joseph Wells / Lt. Commanding Raingers" is signed twice: once certifying "the above return is correct & just" and once acknowledging the receipt at "Fort Brown, Texas 18th June 1846 from Capt. Miller asst. U.S. Q.M. Forty bushels corn and Sixty bushels Oats in full of the above Requistion."

Samuel Walker's company of almost one hundred Texas Rangers mustered into the U.S. Army in April 1846 for three months, two months before this return was written. Walker's Company, Texas Mounted Rangers, were some of the earliest Texans that General Zachary Taylor allowed to enlist. Joseph P. Wells served as the company's first lieutenant (later in June, he became captain).

This light-blue document has smoothed folds. The ink is clear and bold. With light showthrough from the docketing on the verso, which reads, ". . . Joseph Wells Lt. Comdg. Rangers."
