[Indian Wars]: Fort McKinney Cartridges, Holster, Cartridge Pouch, US Cavalry pins and Patches. Fort McKinney was established in 1877 as a concentrated reaction to the defeat of then Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer at Little Big Horn. These shells being from 1878 put them in the era of the second Fort McKinney which had moved from its original location on the Powder River, 45 miles north. The new fort was to provide support for the Army, who had been attempting to drive the Sioux and Cheyenne back into the Black Hills and Big Horn Mountains. Each cartridge stands at 2".

The patches as well as the pins are all presumably from Custer era U.S. Cavalry hats. Both of the larger "U.S." patches are 2 3/4" x 1 3/4" with the smaller patch at 1 1/4" x 1 1/2". The long patch is reported as a collar rank insignia, 9" in length. Both f the crossed sword pins are 2 3/4" x 1". The two leather pieces are in fine condition, the pouch is 7 1/4" x 3 3/4" and the holster is 10" x 5".
