Description

[George Armstrong Custer]: Unpublished Albumen Image.

This lovely, unknown example is very similar to the next Lot 40082-a published photograph we are offering in this same sale that can be found on page 147 of The Custer Album: A Pictorial Biography of George A. Custer by Lawrence A. Frost. That sample depicts a similar scene featuring Tom Custer, Agnes Wadsworth, and W.W. Cooke, and the two images are thought to be from the same photography session. This unpublished photograph was most likely taken in the Dakotas in 1875, and it provides an attractive scene of ladies and gentlemen bundled up and seated in three pairs on the sleigh. It is extremely probable that the dynamic George Armstrong Custer is among those pictured here, especially considering the friendly company documented in the similar photograph. Areas in the bottom two corners suggest something was once pasted there. The image is lightly damaged where loss is present to the top layer of paper. The photograph has a tear at the bottom edge and some light staining in the field. An inkblot is at the bottom corner of the mount, and the tip of the photograph's top left corner is folded over. Measuring at a nice size of 9.5" x 8", this piece is still in good condition with wonderful contrast and display appeal. The B.G. Chip Newman Collection
