[Doniphan Expedition]. Embellished Mexican Leather Belt Belonging to Doniphan Expedition Member Friedrich A. Wislizenus. Measuring 34" in length, this piteado-style belt uses porcupine quill instead of the usual cactus fiber in the embroidery. The interior is lined with striped fabric and features a period ink inscription and the owner's signature. German motto, "Gedenke Mein [Remember Me]," embroidered on the front shield. The belt also contains a hidden wallet. Also included is a reprint of Frederick Wislizenus' 1848 memoir, "Memoir of a Tour of Northern Mexico, Connected with Col. Doniphan's Expedition, in 1846 and 1847."

Friedrich Adolph Wislizenus (1810-1889), a native of Germany, immigrated to the United States in 1834 after taking part in an attempted revolution against the monarchies of the German Confederation. He moved to St. Louis in 1839 and joined an expedition west with the Rocky Mountain Fur Company, returning to Missouri the following year. In 1846, he travelled into Northern Mexico as a member of a merchant expedition, but was captured and imprisoned due to the war with Mexico. After several months of imprisonment, they were finally freed and Wislizenus joined Colonel Alexander Doniphan and his 1st Regiment of Missouri Mounted Volunteers as a surgeon on their return to the United States.
