    Description

Winchester Model 1894 Saddle Ring Carbine with Northwest Coast Indian-carved Stock. Zoomorphic carving and shell inlay on outer side of the stock. Overall the gun is very good, with honest, even-wear patina. Metal is even gray color, with no rust or pitting. Bore good. One small dent on underside of magazine. Various minor dings and abrasions on the wood as would be expected. A previous owner had applied a light coating of varnish or other type of protective clear-coat.

The vast majority of what purport to be Northwest Coast carved guns are modern recarving on vintage rifles. However, the present example gives every indication of being original and authentic. One giveaway on fakes is that they tend to be over-embellished, and usually both sides of the stock have carving. Here the carving is on the exposed outer side only, as one would expect on a working gun - especially a saddle-ring carbine which would be exposed to wear on the inside. The patina is consistent and convincing. Serial #811041. Length 38".

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
