    Description

Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Single Shot Rifle With Winchester Factory Letter. Serial no. 8805 (in script font), .32 W.C.F. caliber, 28-inch octagonal barrel with Rocky Mountain front sight and elevator rear sight. Blued finish. Tapped for tang sight. Oiled walnut stock with crescent buttplate. The upper portion of the buttplate extends along the comb for 2 1/2-inches, a feature of early models. The oiled walnut fore-end has a faux-inlay at the cap. The initials "C.K. [unknown symbol]" are naively carved into the stock just aft of the lower tang. The rifle is sold with a framed and matted Winchester factory letter dated July 2, 1985 and addressed to the Pulitzer Prize and Oscar winning American writer, David Mamet. The letter indicates that the rifle was received in the Winchester warehouse on April 2, 1887 and shipped on April 6, 1887. The letter is framed with an autograph signed note from Mamet on his personal letterhead dated 3 Dec 86, hand written: "Dear Chris-Well-it DID have your initials on it. Merry Xmas-David."
Condition: Excellent as refinished. Retaining 95-99% of the new blue finish and exhibiting little wear to the metal. Two added sight dovetails have been filled with wedges, one of which effects a portion of the Winchester address. The stock and fore-end exhibit a few scratches and trivial scrapes. The bore is dark, but appears strong with light pitting running its length.

David Mamet's Notes: I found this low serial number beauty at an auction in Vermont leaning against the barn door by the auctioneer. It was covered in rust, but I, canny soul, checked out the bore and finding it clean, rubbed an inconspicuous patch of rust off the barrel and found it late-appearing surface rust. NE gunsmiths put it "back to one," as we say in the movie business and I kept it as long as I, in good conscience, could before, in an attack of righteous behavior, giving it to my hunting buddy Chris whose initials had been carved in the stock some hundred years ago.
