    Description

U.S. Springfield Model 1888 Trapdoor Rifle. Serial no. 521518, .45-70 caliber, 32 5/8-inch round barrel with fixed front and Buffington rear sights. Blued finish with casehardened lock, tang and breechblock. Lock marked [eagle]/U.S./SPRINGFIELD; breechblock marked U.S./MODEL/1873. Barrel marked with standard proofs. Walnut stock with two barrel bands, two sling swivels, one stacking swivel, sliding ramrod bayonet and trap in the buttplate. Stock inspector cartouched and dated 1891 and with a property number 55 stamped near the buttplate.
Condition: Very good. Blued finish with a nice plum brown patina, case colors remain strong on the breechblock. Flayderman states that the proper date on the breechblock should be 1884, so this 1873 dated breech is likely a later replacement. The stock has a few scattered light scratches and one small chip along the top edge between the barrel bands. Bright bore and crisp action.
