U.S. Model 1841 Percussion "Mississippi" Rifle. .54 caliber, 33-inch round, rifled barrel. Brass front and notched rear sights. Made without provision for bayonet. Tail of lockplate marked HarpersFerry/1853. American eagle and shield stamped over US forward of hammer. Brass mountings and patchbox. Two sling swivels. Steel ramrod with trumpet head. Oil finished walnut stock. Dated 1853. Regarded by many collectors as one of the most handsome of all percussion U.S. military longarms, the "Mississippi Rifle" owes its name to the successful use of the weapon by a Mississippi regiment under command of Jefferson Davis, in the Mexican War. Condition of rifling and bores has become more important than in previous years. Fine bores on upper grades tend to fetch a premium. Condition: Very good to fine. Steel a gray patina with scattered fine nicks and fine pitting. Breech with some moderate pitting. Mellow patina to brass. Stock fine with scattered dents and normal handling wear. Possible sliver chip at upper tang under hammer. Remainders of an old varnish observed. Action crisp. Very strong bore with only minor patches of fine pitting observed.
