Unsigned, Incise Carved, South Central Pennsylvania Original Flintlock Full Stock Rifle C. 1830 42 1/2" full octagon .52 caliber smoothbore barrel. V notch rear sight, brass dovetailed blade front sight. Barrel smooth with deep dark patina, just some light pitting in the breech / touch hole area. Original flintlock configuration with very fine quality Joseph Golcher lock with reinforced cock and scroll/floral engraving overall. The lock in about perfect condition. All brass furniture. Trigger guard, nose cap and butt plate with dark untouched patina, while the patchbox, ramrod pipes and side plate appear to have been lightly hand cleaned. The curved side plate is nicely decorated with engraving generally in geometric motifs. Unengraved patchbox with 'rooster comb' finial with the release button on the side of the butt plate. The trigger guard exhibits an unusual decorative 'bump' on the front of the bow, possibly unique to this maker. 3 1/2" unengraved screw fastened toe plate. The wood is excellent with overall dark patina and no restoration, although retaining what appears to be an easily removed thin coat of old varnish. The wrist is exquisitely checkered with deeply cut, round bottom, wide incised line borders. Really beautifully done and the checkering very fine and crisp. 2 1/2" moulded cheekpiece. Nicely incise carved behind the cheek piece with large opposing C scrolls with smaller decorative scrolls along the interior edges of the larger C's. There are two age hairlines on the lower corner of the butt, and one age hairline on the obverse side of the forestock by the front barrel key. All minor and very sound. The barrel is held in place with four brass keys and the rifle retains what appears to be the original ramrod. A beautiful rifle in wonderful original condition.
