The Most Elaborately Decorated American Firearm We've Ever Handled! This custom-built, half-stock percussion smoothbore rifle certainly warrants the term "unique". The rifle measures 40¼" overall with a 26½" round .59 caliber barrel. The barrel, held by a single brass band, is marked "Sharps Rifle/ Manufacturing Co/ Hartford, Conn" and it has been converted to smoothbore. The underside of the barrel is fitted with a brass rod tube, though sadly the rod is missing. The walnut half-stock has been meticulously decorated with large and small round-head brass tacks; the larger festoon the wrist of the stock; the smaller used as accents and borders to further enhance the decorative elements. Elaborate, almost whimsical brass scrolls and scallops are inlayed on a majority of the stock and brass stars and diamond shapes are interspersed around these designs. Small round inlays of what appears to be mahogany, are set about the brass geometrical elements in set patterns. A pewter tip on the fore stock and a pewter heart shape inlayed on the upper portion of the butt complete the decoration of this remarkable work of art. This is a singular rifle, in remarkable condition. Though there is no provenance to support the speculation, it is highly likely that this rifle was custom-built for a performer in one of the wild west shows so popular in America and Europe in the late 19th century. In any case, it undoubtedly a special rifle, with a potentially intriguing history.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
