Wounded Knee: Another Wounded Knee Battlefield Gun. Also picked up from the scene of the massacre shortly after its conclusion. When the pair arrived the soldiers were collecting the 200+ bodies, and Nellie did her best to help minister to the survivors.

This lever-action gun is a Marlin / Ballard Falling Block Single Shot Rifle, Serial no. 5845, manufactured in 1883. Overall condition is good, with smooth gray age patina wear and pitting. Old wire-wrap repair to crack in the wrist which runs on into the stock, a crude repair which served to keep the gun serviceable, but hardly what would have been employed by a non-Indian owner. Rear sight elevator is absent, and action requires adjustment. A notarized letter of provenance from the consignor accompanies the lot.

From the Rathbun Family Collection. See also Lots 51370 through 51412 for additional material from this collection.
