    Description

    U.S. Springfield Model 1878 Trapdoor Rifle. Serial no. 284135, .45-70 caliber, 32 1/2-inch barrel with fixed front sight and rear adjustable military sight. Blued finish. Top of breech marked: US / MODEL / 1878. Undated lock marked with an eagle and U.S. / SPRINGFIELD. V/P/(eagle) proof at base of barrel. Varnished walnut stock with two barrel bands, sling swivels and stacking swivel. Faint 1884 cartouche to left side of stock and circle P proof at base of stock. US marked carbine buttplate. Property from the Estate of John R. Eckel, Sr.

    Condition: Very good. Retaining approximately 20-30% finish, the balance a plum brown patina with handling wear and scattered pitting. Wood showing scuffs, dings and bruises. Noticeable scrape to left side under cartouche and minor wood loss around buttplate. Action good. Moderately pitted bore.
