    Smith (Poultney & Trimble) Percussion Breech-Loading Civil War Saddle Ring Carbine.

    Serial no. 9398 [barrel and receiver], .50 caliber, 21 1/2-inch octagonal and round barrel, with fixed front sight and rear ladder sight. Blued finish and case-hardened finish. Left side of the receiver marked: SMITH'S PATENT / JUNE 23, 1857 and ADDRESS / POULTNEY & TRIMBLE / BALTIMORE U.S.A. Saddle ring. L.F.R. stamped to left side of barrel. Smooth walnut straight stock and fore-end. One cartouche to left side of stock. Metal carbine butt.

    Condition: Good. Finish primarily a dark grey patina with noticeable areas of handling wear, age and pitting. Heavy scuffs, dings and bruising present to wood. Action good. Lightly pitted bore.
