    Sharps Model 1874 Sporting Rifle with Factory Letter. Serial no. 158976, .45-90 caliber (2 7/8), 30-inch barrel with dove-tailed blade front and flip-up ladder rear sight. Blued and case-hardened finish. Top barrel flat marked: OLD RELIABLE, SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT, CONN. , CALIBRE .45. Barrel under fore arm is marked: D, 158976, 11/4/16. Left side of receiver with Sharp's patent mark. Double set triggers. Inspector's D and Y on breech and block respectively. Varnished walnut stock with interior of fore arm marked: 8976. Steel butt plate. 15 lbs.

    With this rifle is a factory letter from Dr. Labowskie documenting shipping to F.E. Conrad, Fort Griffin, Texas, care of Morehead & Co. Fort Worth, Texas. (Morehead & Co. were important frontier freighters. They are mentioned several times in the Conrad ledger.) Letter also confirms current caliber, barrel length, double triggers and open sights.

    Condition: Very good. Barrel with a smooth, thinning gray-brown patina and scattered fine scratches. Case colors have silvered nicely throughout the receiver and breech. Small patch of fine pitting to hammer. Stock is very good showing just typical dents and light scratches. Later applied varnish.
