    Shipped to Fort Griffin 1874

Sharps Model 1874 Heavy Sporting Rifle. Serial no. 160279 (receiver and butt plate), .45 caliber (2 7/8), 30-inch octagonal barrel with Bridgeport address, blade front sight, partial rear sight and stamped: OLD RELIABLE. Top barrel flat at breech marked: CAL. 45. Right barrel flat marked: 2 7/8. Left side of frame with Sharps Rifle Co. patent marking. Double-set triggers. Walnut stock with two rawhide bands. Standard shotgun buttplate. Weight approximately 16 lbs.

Included in the lot is a Sharps factory letter from Dr. Labowskie which documents this rifle being invoiced in September 1877 to F.E. Conrad, Fort Griffin, Texas, care of Morehead & Co., Fort Worth, Texas. Morehead was a well-known freighter in Fort Worth whose work carried them out to the frontier settlements. They are listed many times in the Conrad ledger book of this period. The letter confirms the configuration of this rifle.

Condition: Fair to good. Barrel with a mostly smooth and thin gray-blue patina with scattered staining. Breech and lock plate also smooth and mottled with traces of silvered case colors. Heavy scratches to the patent marking. Stock is poor to fair with heavy weathering. Losses around tang and at butt plate. Scattered dents and small gouges. Crack at the wrist. Splintering of the fore-arm. Bright bore showing moderate wear and pitting. Action excellent.
