    Sharps Big Fifty Shipped to N. Curry & Bro. San Francisco

    Sharps Model 1874 Heavy Sporting Rifle with Factory Letter.
    Serial no. C52957 (receiver, barrel, buttplate and inside of fore-end 957), .50 caliber, 30-inch octagonal barrel with Hartford address, blade front and Lawrence-marked rear sights. Rear tang-mounted Sporting sight with peep. Side of base marked: 5713. Top barrel flat at breech marked: CALIBRE. 50. Left side of frame with C. Sharps patent marking. Double-set triggers. Oil-finished walnut stock with pewter fore-end tip. Smooth, curved steel buttplate. Weight approximately 12 lbs. Sold together with a Sharps Factory Letter by Dr. Labowskie confirming current configuration except a globe front sight. Rifle was shipped to the famous N. Curry & Brother in San Francisco from Hartford in the spring of 1874. Nathaniel and John Curry operated their late father Charles Curry's gun shop in San Francisco. It was in business from 1853 until 1888.

    Condition: Fine. Barrel now with a very smooth, thin, blue-brown patina with high point edge wear and scattered nicks. Traces of case colors right side of breech and behind the hammer, the balance faded to thin silver. Stock is fine with scattered dents and scratches but no losses except for 3 period of use gouges under the stock near the end of the tang. Crack in pewter fore-end. Bright bore showing moderate wear and some fine pitting. Action excellent.
