    Merrill Breech Loading Saddle Ring Carbine Possibly Transitional. Serial no. 12450, .54 caliber, 22 1/8-inch barrel with blade front and 3-blade flip-up rear sights. Case-hardened lock and breech block. Lock plate is serialized 12450 and stamped: J.H.MERRILL BALTO/PAT. JULY 1858/APL. 9. MAY21-28-61. Lever-action breech the top marked: J.H.MERRILL BALTO/PAT JULY 1858. Brass barrel band, triggerguard and curved butt plate. Walnut stock with sling bar and saddle ring present. 14,495 manufactured. This example lacks the patch box of the first models but is marked without eagle on lock as is consistent with first models. It lacks the date on the back of the lock. Dates instead of serial numbers are found on second models. Condition: Very good. Steel with traces of blue but mostly a golden brown patina likely from a smoker's environment. Brass with mellow age patina. Stock good with traces of varnish and scattered dents. Nice age patina to wood.
