    Description

"Calamity Jane" Canary: Her Purported Personal Winchester Rifle. Few figures of Western lore deserve the description "colorful" more than Martha Jane Canary. Frontierswoman and alleged consort of "Wild Bill" Hickok, Calamity Jane she often dressed and was photographed as a man. Although her name is legendary, details of her life are sketchy. She claimed to have been a scout for the army, and that she acquired her nickname in connection with an incident while scouting in 1872-73. However, "Captain" Jack Crawford, himself less than a reliable witness, wrote in 1904 that she "never saw service in any capacity under either General Crooke or General Miles. She never saw a lynching and was never in an Indian fight. She was simply a notorious character, dissolute and devilish, but possessed of a generous streak which made her popular."
In 1893 Calamity joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West, and appeared at the Pan American Exposition in 1901. It was probably her association with Cody which made her interesting to legendary Western collectors Don and Stella Foote who featured her in their landmark 1964 World's Fair Exhibit. The Winchester offered here can just be made out in the photos of the display standing on the left side along with her Kentucky rifle. Her collection was sold at Butterfields in 1988, when both guns were purchased by Robert A. Palazzo from whose estate they are consigned here.
