    Scarce Remington-Keene Magazine Bolt Action Rifle.

    Unserialized, .45-70 caliber, 24 1/2-inch barrel. Originally blued finish. Iron mountings present. Walnut straight-stock. Sling swivels present. Top of breech marked "E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION N.Y. / PATENT FEB. 24 MARCH 17, 1874 JAN, 18 / SEPT. 26, 1876. MAR. 20. JUL. 31. 77. Fitted with a front and rear sight. Front sight [possibly reconfigured at some point]. The rear sight is a standard Remington folding single leaf sight. Also known as the Hunter's or Sporting Rifle model. According to Flaydermans's Guide, this was Remington's first production bolt action firearm, the Keene had an outside, visible hammer, with bolt closed, hammer was manually cocked. Made between 1880-1883 and total quantities estimated around 5000. This gun has a great look it, right out of the Old West and Frontier Days.

    Condition: Good as configured. Retaining overall mostly a light mottled grey patina, with areas of pitting and mars. Metal and wood appear to have been cleaned at some point. Wood with numerous bumps and bruising. Some cracks and repairs present, including one on the forearms from the magazine area to the fore-end cap and one near back of buttstock. Some bumps, dents to magazine tube. Drilled top of breech. Marred screws. Action works. Bore clean, light rifling present.
