Description

    Smith (Poultney & Trimble) Percussion Breech-Loading Civil War Saddle Ring Carbine.
    Serial no. 1352. .50 caliber. 21 ½-inch round barrel, octagonal to the rear of the barrel band with fixed blade front sight and flip-up rear sight. Barrel marked "L.F.R." on the left side. Iron mountings, blued barrel with casehardened breech. Left side of the receiver marked: "MANUFACTURED BY / AMN. M'CHN. WKS / SPRINGFIELD, MASS." and "ADDRESS / POULTNEY & TRIMBLE / BALTIMORE. U.S.A. / SMITH'S PATENT / JUNE 23 1857". Saddle ring and bar on the left side of the breech. Walnut stocks. Faint inspector's cartouche on the left side of the butt near the breech. Curved metal buttplate.

    Condition: Very good. Retaining approximately 60% blue on barrel worn thin in spots and with an even brown patina and retaining approximately 60% casehardening on the breech. Several of the screw head slots show wear. Wood furniture with modest light surface scratches. Walnut stocks have been re-varnished. With a bright bore and in excellent mechanical condition.
