DescriptionRare American Double Barrel Hammer Shotgun by John E. Long, Detroit, Michigan. Serial no. 5702, 12 gauge, 29 7/8-inch Damascus side-by-side barrels. Bead type front sight. Concave rib, the legend at base of barrel reading: John E. Long, Detroit, Mich. Top of barrel latch finely engraved with floral scrolls. Thumb-activated latch marked: Powel's Patent. Upper tang engraved with interlocking floral meander. Sides of lockplates engraved with pictorial ovals of game dogs. Side plates engraved with woodland bird scenes, with dentate and floral blossom borders. Floorplate and bottom of triggerguard engraved with a reprise of the side plates. High-profile gooseneck hammers, the sides engraved with fine scrolls. Double triggers. Checkered burled walnut pistol-grip stock and fore-end. Steel buttplate. John E. Long, an American Gun Maker did business at 110 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, Michigan from 1872-1875.
Condition: Fair. Metal lightly cleaned overall, now showing a smooth grey age patina with scattered light blemishes. Wood worn smooth and showing wear and minor marks. Action good.
