First Model Merrill Breech-Loading Percussion Carbine. Serial no. 8174, .54 caliber, 20-inch barrel with standard sights. Saddle ring and bar. Sold together with associated period leather sling. Standard lock mechanism marked: 8174/J.H. Merrill, Balto./Pat. July 1858./Apl. 9 May 21-26, '61. Walnut stock with brass patchbox and furniture. Approximately 14.495 of this model were manufactured. Metal generally smooth and gray with just some scattered dents and minor pitting, exemplary of honest use rather than abuse. A good representative example of this desirable and reasonably scarce Civil War carbine.
