Very Fine US M1861 .58 Caliber Percussion Rifled Musket With History of Ownership, Trenton 1864. A beautiful gun which, overall, gives the appearance of being unissued with the metal being perfect, but with a wonderful untouched brown patina. All marks/dates crisp, including an 1863 tang date and N. J. on the side of the barrel at the breech. Mechanically perfect with mint bore. Wood also very fine with small deep script NJ cartouche opposite the lock. Just a few scattered dents nicks that appear to be as much from storage as use. The gun is accompanied by a notarized letter stating that it belonged the the affaint's grandfather Frederick Scholes. Although stating he served in the "13th New York Infantry Division", records show that he, in fact, served in the 47th New York Inf. from 5/27/62 until 7/23/63, with his entire term of service as a commissioned officer. While it is possible the rifle was owned by Scholes, it is most unlikely it ever saw combat in his possession. A beautiful M1861 rifled musket, with the added interest of some association to Scholes.

    Estimate: $4,000 - $6,000.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
