Unusual, Superb Condition, Full Stock Percussion Berks County Penna. Rifle C. 1840. A very attractive example in really wonderful condition, completely untouched/uncleaned and near mint. 43 1/2" full octagon barrel, in a remarkable .60 caliber with 16 narrow grooves of rifling. 7/8" across the flats, bore about perfect. An unusually large caliber for this late date, with the utilization of 16 grooves of rifling unique in our experience. Obviously meant to bring down large game. Brass blade front sight set back 3 1/4" from the muzzle. Unique rear sight with two tiny screws that can be loosened and retightened to allow a thin blade V notch blade to be raised for elevation. Full maple stock with original red violin type finished about mint, completely untouched with very nice patina. Just a few very minor, really negligible, dents. The front of the nosecap is open with wood exposed indicating its origin in the Reading/Allentown area. All brass furniture untouched with very nice patina and perfect, including wide rounded trigger guard. 4 1/4" scalloped decorative toe plate ending in a point. Large, unembellished oval brass inlay on the raised cheekpiece along with three small decorative brass inlays on either side of the forestock. There is also a rather crude animal that bears a resemblance to a buffalo inlaid on the side opposite the lock. The single screw unmarked/unembellished lock appears to be skillfully handmade. Rather large percussion bolster configured on the face to accept a wrench. All metal with smooth untouched patina, absolutely no rust or pitting. A very attractive rifle, clearly made for use in hunting large game, at ranges that apparently necessitated the large bore and this unique rifling. An attractive and unusual rifle from this desirable Pennsylvania school.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
