    Description

Unsigned, Relief Carved, South Central Pennsylvania Original Flintlock Full Stock Smooth Bore Rifle, C. 1810. 46" octagon to round barrel, .65 caliber smoothbore. Full maple stock with nice curl and three lines of forestock moulding. One shallow sliver missing along the top edge of the forestock on the cheek side, just forward of the rear ramrod pipe, very old and very minor. Else the wood is really excellent, just showing some signs of honest wear and use, completely untouched with nice rich patina. Barrel generally smooth and dark, with just some pitting at the touch hole, very nice. V notch rear sight and dovetailed brass front sight. All brass furniture with dark untouched patina, retaining what appears to be the original ramrod. Relief carved 'teardrop' detail at the rear of the lock highlighted with incised lines. Relief carved scroll work at the juncture of the comb and the wrist. Single line of moulding along the bottom of the buttstock, which is 1 3/4" wide. The gun remains in original flintlock configuration, with hand made lock showing filed line decoration at the tail. There is a plain brass oval wrist escutcheon, and a large, delicately engraved, eight pointed star inlaid on the cheekpiece. Deep relief cheek piece with three incise carved lines of moulding, along with a narrow relief carved panel below the cheekpiece. A relief carved lozenge forward of the cheek piece and multiple relief carved C scrolls, with chip carving along the back edge, at the rear of the cheek piece. Relief carved 'teardrop' detail, identical to the obverse side of the gun, to the rear of the nicely decorated cast brass side plate. An exceptionally attractive, fine quality, and totally untouched Pennsylvania rifle.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
