Unique and Fine 1st Model Virginia Manufactured Flintlock Rifle with Brass Rattlesnake Patch Box, previously unknown. Known for his scholarly texts on the Virginia Manufactory Arms, Giles Cromwell, knew this early pattern with brass patchbox existed but never was able to show one. This beautiful longarm example, previously unknown measures 61 1/2" overall, 46" octagonal barrel, 50 cal. showing traces of rifling. The lock is correctly marked " Virginia/ Manufactory" forward of the cock. The patchbox is a four piece brass rattlesnake head with silver inset tongue. Engraved on the patchbox is the motto "Don't Tread on Me." Other mountings, trigger guard, butt plate, nose cap and 4 ramrod thimbles are also brass. the walnut stock is sound and solid with no repair. This gun overall is quite crisp with sharp edges. Lock is functional but sluggish.

NOTE: Based on burn marks on the wood it appears likely that at some point this gun was converted to percussion, as was the case with other known examples. However, at some subsequent point it was reconverted back to flint. We also believe that based on those facts it is possible the lock was configured and/or replaced.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
