    The Most Historic US M1841 Rifle We've Ever Cataloged - The Patchbox Covered With The Following Period Script Engraved Legend - "Sergt. Joseph Schmaling / Co. H 1st Miss. Rifle / Monterey Sept 21,22,23 1846 / Buena Vista F 22 1847". Whitney Model 1841 U.S. Percussion Rifle .54 caliber rifle. Lock marked "E. Whitney / US" and "N. Haven 1845" deep markings including 1844 barrel date. Metal smooth and generally clean with light brown patina and a coat of easily removed old varnish, dark smooth lock, broken hammer screw. Mechanically perfect with tight crisp action, seven groove rifled bore excellent. Wood excellent with nice dark patina, just few very minor dents. Brass furniture perfect with nice undisturbed patina. Engraved on the patchbox in fine script "Segt Joseph Schmaling / Co H 1st Miss Rifles / Monterey Sept 21. 22. 23. 1846 / Buena Vista Feb 1847".
    During the Mexican War the 1st Mississippi was commanded by Jefferson Davis who resigned his seat in Congress to assume command. At Buena Vista 22 February 1847, with the Mexicans out-numbering the American five to one, Davis gave the order "Stand Fast Mississippians". Included is a 2 page manuscript document in pencil written by Joseph Schmaling relating his experiences during the Mexican War and the siege of Vicksburg during the Civil War, both with remarkable and in some cases gruesome accounts of his experiences in combat. Also included are copies of his widow's pension records. The most historically important US M1841 rifle we've ever cataloged, with the additional benefit of it being in fine condition.
