Reconstructed Confederate Richmond .58 Caliber Percussion Rifled Musket. A Richmond rifle created from an amalgam of period bits and pieces. The markings include an 1863 date at the tail of the lock and C. S. / Richmond, Va. on the forward section of the lock. The right side of the rear sight is marked with the numeral 17, significance unknown. The stock is from an 1855 model Springfield rifled musket and you can just make out the original "ESA" cartouche on the left side. The buttstock exhibits some interesting period carving, with a sequence of initials and numerals deeply carved top to bottom as follows: "W. K. 64 / E. K. 14 / T. K. 18" and on the wrist "C. K. 64". The wood opposite the lock is lightly carved with the initials "A. T" and Roman numerals "XIX". The rear sight is likely not original to the rifle. The second and third barrel bands are 1855/61 model U.S. bands. The rear swivel sling as are the trigger bow and trigger assembly probably belong to the 1855 wood. The metal surfaces have been treated to give an artificial patina. Still, the action is crisp and the rifle is mechanically sound. This would make an excellent display or filler for your collection.
