    Description

Really Exceptional US M1861 Springfield .58 Caliber Percussion Rifled Musket, Springfield, 1862. All metal generally clean, bright and crisp, with just some light scattered patina on the barrel and brown patina on the buttplate. Absolutely no rust, pitting, dents or nicks. All markings deep and crisp including those on the lock and matching 1862 breechdate along with barrel proofs. Mechanically crisp with bore about perfect. The gun is complete and original in every detail. Wood also sharp, just showing signs of very minor use. There are a few scattered minor dents, and the stock now exhibits an old light coat of varnish, easily removed. The rectangular ESA cartouche fully legible in the wood opposite the lock.
In reality a very rare gun, with all but a handful of these early dated Springfields being issued for use early in the war, and seeing heavy use thereafter. A surviving specimen in this superb condition rarely surfaces on the open market.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
