    Description

Rare Full Stock Flintlock Pennsylvania Rifle by John Meals. One of Meals' earlier rifles, this gun was produced C. 1830 in Adams County, Pennsylvania. One of the more unusual rifle makers, Meals' rifles exude an almost abstract quality in the design elements he used, and boasted that no two of his rifles were exactly alike. Rifles by him from this early period are quite scarce. 44", now smooth .45 caliber full octagonal barrel signed in script "J. Meal" (S likely worn away). Also a script "J. M." on the face of the hand made lock, which has an unusual upward turned teat at the rear. Brass mounts with engraved four piece patchbox, 2 5/8" diamond shaped brass inlay on cheek with engraved very 'folksy' spread winged eagle. Brass wrist escutcheon, entry and middle ramrod pipes with brass barrel keys underneath, two screw side plate and long engraved toe plate. Notched rear sight with dovetailed brass blade front sight. Original wooden ramrod with old iron tip to attach worm. Overall excellent condition with nice patina, just showing some minor honest wear. The front 14" of the forestock is replaced and pinned and a 1 3/8" piece of wood is replaced at the front of the lock. Both repairs done extremely well. Set trigger needs slight adjustment. Rare opportunity to obtain an early example of a rifle by this scarce and somewhat eccentric maker.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
