Half-Stock Percussion Target Rifle with Colt Paterson Barrel.
Unserialized, approximately .44 caliber, 32-inch octagonal barrel with address reading: PATENT ARMS M'G CO PATERSON N.J.-COLT'S PT.* [squiggled line]. Hooded post front sight. Rear tang mounted peep sight. Double set triggers. Stock of handsome figured walnut and with cheek rest. Brass trigger guard and curved brass buttplate. Left side of wrist with vacant escutcheon. Hardwood ram rod in steel pipes.

According to R.L. Wilson the barrel on this rifle was likely sold in 1842 in Paterson's Colt factory at the public auction held after the bankruptcy of the Patent Arms Mfg. Co. The purchaser was Samuel Colt's nemesis, and former business associate, John Elhers. This is the only example known to Wilson to have been utilized in a single shot sporting rifle of the period.

Stock is fine showing scattered nicks and light scratches. One small chip at cheek rest and small crack at toe. Trigger guard screws are later replacements. Ram rod broken.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
