Fine Northampton County Pennsylvania Full Stock Original Flintlock Rifle Signed On The Patchbox By Jacob Cope C. 1820. 39 1/2" full octagon .50 caliber smoothbore barrel. Original flintlock configuration with hand made lock exhibiting filed line decoration at the tail. V notch rear sight, brass dovetailed front sight. 'Violin' finish maple stock with excellent curl and nice rich patina. There is a 1/4" X 9" sliver nicely inlaid/repaired on the obverse side of the forestock, with the front touching the nose cap, which is decorated with incised lines. There is also a minor age hairline, with no loss, on the reverse side of the forestock that extends from just forward of the rear ramrod pipe to the nose cap. Oval brass pin escutcheons. Two incised lines of forestock moulding. Brass furniture with nice patina. Two piece patchbox with very wide lid which is signed in script "Jacob Cope Gun Smith". Finial with scalloped edge and diamond shaped piercing. Plain 3 1/4" toeplate which incorporates the patchbox release. Very wide trigger guard and extensions, with the rear extension terminating in a point. 3/4" wide brass wear plate on the underside of the forestock that extends from the front of the trigger guard to the rear ramrod pipe with the front portion actually forming the rear extension of the ramrod pipe. A very unusual detail. Cast side plate which terminates in a point, oval brass wrist escutcheon engraved with intertwined script letters and daisy like, six pointed brass inlay on the nicely moulded cheekpiece which is decorated with incised line of moulding.
A very pretty rifle, exhibiting a number of most unusual details, from a very desirable school and in fine condition. Believed to be one of only two rifles signed by this maker known.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
