Early 19th Century British Baker Flintlock Rifle. Round, 30 1/8" .67 bore rifled barrel, excellent bore. There are two proof marks near the breech, a tiny crown on the breech plug tang, a two leaf V rear sight, one leaf folds and one is stationary, which is dovetailed 7" forward of the breech plug and a blade front sight 3 1/2" back from the muzzle. This particular specimen was originally made for a side mount saber bayonet, but the two mounting points have been filled in and a single stud affixed under the barrel for a socket bayonet. The gun has a flat surface lock plate, and conforming hammer, with a crown over "GR" in the center and "TOWER" marked vertically in the rear. All mounts are brass and they include the side plate, trigger guard, patchbox, ramrod pipes, wrist escutcheon and a butt plate that bears the markings "P. R. 19". The walnut stock is held to the barrel by three keys and retains what appears to be the original iron ramrod. This is an obvious reconversion with correct replacement lock parts. There is a light salt and pepper surface on the barrel (over a twisted Damascus like finish) and lock plate, with quite a bit of wear apparent on the stock. Despite the wear the brass has a pleasant patina and the wood a warm glow. The edge of the muzzle is slightly uneven with a number of dents. An important military rifle, used with by British rifle units in Canada during the War of 1812, and with devastating effect during the Napoleonic Wars. Interestingly many Mexican troops were armed with these rifles at the Alamo. Nice representative example of this important rifle.
