    E. Whitney Enfield Style .58 Caliber Three Band Percussion Rifled Musket. Gun with generally smooth deep dark untouched patina overall, with just some light pitting at the breech. Retains an oversized front band, often encountered on these rifles, but missing the two lower bands. The ramrod is an incorrect replacement (M1855/61), the sight although period is a replacement , and there is, scratched on the left side of the buttstock an ID to a member of the 2nd Virginia which we deem to be spurious. The lock is marked E. Whitney, the hammer screw is a recent replacement. Two piece trigger guard with iron base and brass bow. Enfield style buttplate and lock screw escutcheons. The stock also, other than the scratched name untouched and completely 'in the black'. There are some abrasions forward of the front band, minor. Falling into the category of Whitney's "Good and Serviceable Arms" weapons of this genre found their way into the hands of troops on both sides, with thousands known to have been shipped to southern states just prior to the beginning of the war. A scarce and interesting rifled musket that certainly saw Civil War use and very possibly Confederate.
