    Confederate Import Austrian Lorenz Model 1854 Military Percussion Musket. .54 caliber, 37 1/4-inch barrel with pedestal front sight, three steel bands and dovetailed open rear sight. Breech marked: BEN??. Lock marked: 859 [1859 production date]. Light walnut or oak stock with name Bentz stamped into bottom side of buttstock behind lower tang. Initial "A" carved into left side of buttstock. Steel furniture. Sling mounts. This rifle, in .54 caliber was so it could accommodate the same ammunition as the Confederate "Mississippi" rifle. Federal arsenals rebored the 1854 Lorenz into .58 caliber to use Springfield ammunition. Approximately 27,000 Austrian rifles were imported by the Confederacy during the Civil War. Condition: Good to very good for this model. Metal cleaned, showing wear and scattered pitting. Wood very good to fine with light wear, small chip behind lock and marks present overall. Action very good.
