    Description

Circa 1780 British "Short Land" Pattern Flintlock Musket, Also Known As the "2nd Model Brown Bess." 41 1/2" round barrel, likely shortened 1/2" during the period, very common on these guns. There is the vestige of one proof mark else the barrel is unmarked. Slightly banana shaped round faced lock marked "TOWER" vertically at the rear and crown over "GR" forward of the hammer. The mounts which include side plate, butt plate, trigger guard, nose cap, wrist escutcheon and ramrod pipes are of brass. There are several indecipherable marks behind the rear trigger guard tang and another on the right side of the comb. The gun shows heavy use with some minor restoration. Barrel with very light pitting and the front 12" of the forestock shows evidence of some minor wood restoration on both sides. There are small gaps around the barrel tang and the rear of the lock that appear to be the result of shrinkage and use. The comb of the stock was slightly lowered during the period of use. Still a good representative example of this desirable British infantry musket.
