British Land Pattern Brown Bess Flintlock Musket Surcharged to 29th Regiment, Who Were Present at the Boston Massacre Approximately .78 caliber, 41 1/2-inch round steel barrel, the top marked "29 REG t" next to British proofs. Lock marked "TOWER [crown]/GR." Standard hardwood stock with sling swivels and brass furniture. Acorn wrist escutcheon marked "C/88." Steel ram rod marked DS and with wormed tip. Tail pipe interior marked "D/H/[broad arrow.]. Very nice untouched condition with metal a smooth plum color with just some light pitting at the breech. Mechanically fine, all brass with nice mellow age patina. The stock shows an old repair on the fore end, with a crack through at the tail pipe, where there is another old small repair. There is a filled chip at the rear of the tang and a small filled area on the wrist. All repairs relatively minor and warrant professional, competent restoration, recognizing the historical importance of the gun. The 29th Foot was raised by Colonel Thomas Farrington in 1694 and was present at the Boston massacre, doubtless along with this historical musket. Subsequent to the action they were assigned the moniker the "Vein Openers" for having shed the first blood of the Revolution. The regiment returned to England in 1773, but by the Spring of 1776 they were back in Canada, opposing invading American forces. The Grenadier and Light companies surrendered along with Burgoyne in 1777, while the line companies remained engaged in small unit actions along the American - Canadian border throughout the war. The regiment finally returned to England in 1787. Wonderful 2nd Model musket with superb history.
