    Description

1814-Dated French M1777 Infantry Flintlock Fusil. Dated 1814 on the left barrel flat suggesting it incorporates the modifications of both 1809 and 1813. The .66 bore 44 3/4" barrel is octagonal in the area of the touch hole but quickly transitions to round. Three barrel bands held in place by springs, with a blade front sight integral with the front band, bayonet stud on the underside of the barrel. All mounts are iron, brass pan, finger ridges on the rear trigger guard tang. Retains the original ramrod and sling swivels. In addition to the aforementioned date the barrel tang is marked "M 1777" and there are several armory marks in the breech area. Lock bears the mark "26" on the area forward of the pan and "Manuf. Imp. / de St Etienne" on the lock face. There is another small mark on the side plate and a stamped circular mark on the center of the right butt. Left side of the butt with dished out cheek piece. Original flintlock configuration, the gun shows honest wear with all metal smooth, excellent mechanism. Fine untouched example of this scarce and desirable French 1st Empire longarm.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
