Description
Winchester Model 55 Lever Action Rifle with History as Used and Belonging to Captain Frank Hamer.Serial no. 10849, .30 W.C.F. caliber, 24 1/4-inch barrel with fixed front sight and rear elevation sight. Rear peep sight. Blued and case-hardened finish. Walnut straight stock and fore-end. Custom decoratively carved wrist. 36 stamped just in front of trigger. Grooved metal buttplate. Manufactured in 1929.
Sold together with a notarized letter from Frank Hamer Jr. [State of Texas / County of Travis] as to the history and chain of ownership, in it, it reads "This rifle is one which my father bought in Del Rio, Texas about 1912........." This rifle was willed to me by my father at the time of his death"...... Also included is a letter of provenance signed and dated [also notarized] by Frank Hamer Jr. on September 15, 1986, describing the gun by serial number and stating the fact that the gun purchased by "Robert Palazzo, Lot 601 in the Raymond Brown Auction, March 1986 was used and owned by his father, Captain Frank Hamer in his service as a Texas Ranger." According to the letter, this particular rifle was exhibited in the Fort Fisher Museum, Waco, Texas and at the time it was removed from the museum, Hamer Jr. delivered it to Raymond Brown [Lot -601 tag from the auction also included].
Note: One discrepancy that came up while researching this gun and the provenance is the fact that Hamer Jr. mentions the gun bought about 1912 in his notarized letter, when in fact Winchester records have this gun as being manufactured around 1929, one can only assume that his memory might have been faulty as to the date, but that does not disqualify the ownership, either way, we felt it important to highlight and document the discrepancy.
Property from the Estate of Robert (Bobby) Palazzo, Westlake Village, Ca.
Condition: Good. Retaining approximately 30-40% of a thinning finish with noticeable signs of handling wear and patches of pitting. Dings, scuffs and bruising present to wood. Action crisp. Lightly pitted bore.
