Spencer Model 1865 Saddle Ring Carbine Battle Used and Belonging to Chief Hollow-Horn-Bear with Typed Letter.
Serial no. 375 [top of action], .50 caliber, 20-inch barrel with fixed front sight and rear folding ladder sight. Blued and case-hardened finish. Saddle ring. Smooth walnut straight stock and splinter fore-end. Five notches carved into the right side of the stock. According to the typed letter included, Chief Hollow-Horn-Bear filed a notch after each battle. It lists the five battles as: Fetterman Massacre (1866), Hatfield or Wagon Box Fight (August 1, 1867), Yellowstone Battle (August 4, 1873), Rosebud Battle with Crooks (June 17, 1876) and Battle of Greasy Grass (Little Bighorn).

Condition: Good. Finish primarily a dark grey patina with scattered signs of handling wear age and pitting. Heavy scuffs, dings and bruising present to wood. Sling swivels absent. Action good. Moderately pitted bore. The Michael Ward Collection of Western Americana
