    Rare Japanese Marked Model 1868 Spencer Breechloading Carbine. Serial no. 106279, .50 caliber, 20-inch barrel with pedestal front sight, single iron band and ladder-type rear sight. 6-groove rifling. Walnut stock and fore-end with Japanese ordnance inspection star pattern cartouche and Japanese characters stamped into right side of buttstock. No Stabler cut-off. Spencer cut-off present but no NM markings at breech. Saddle ring and bar removed. Sling mounts. According to consignor, these Spencers were purchased by agents of the Japanese Meiji Emperor to fight samurai in the Satsuma Rebellion. It was returned to the US by American soldiers who looted the Japanese National Military Museum during the occupation of Japan after WWII. Condition: Good to very good. Metal with a mottled brown age patina with scattered light pitting and spotting overall. Wood showing wear and light bruises. Action good.
